An evening of music and ice cream
The Sandwich Schools Band Boosters hosted the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Band for a concert on November 3rd
at the H.T. Wing School. Following the performance, ice cream sundaes from Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlor were served, with proceeds from the sundae sales benefiting the Grades 4-8 Bands in all three Sandwich Schools.
Over a hundred music students and their families attended and made for a very attentive audience. The MMA Chorus, Jazz, and Concert Band entertained both new and veteran musicians in the crowd with diverse selections ranging from Francis Scott Keyes to Coldplay.
A raffle prize drawing was held to close the evening, with lucky winners taking home an iPod, music gift cards, and accessories. Because of this event, hundreds of dollars were raised to directly benefit music education in Sandwich.
The instrumental music program in Sandwich is open to students in grades four through twelve and offers in-school and after-school music instruction and performance opportunities. The Band Boosters organization supports the Instrumental Music Department in the Sandwich Public Schools through fundraising and advocacy, and aims to enhance and enrich the music education experience of students in the elementary, junior high and high school bands.
The Sandwich Band Directors and Boosters organization are grateful to the MMA Band for coming to Sandwich for this very special performance. As the most highly visible, audible and disciplined representative of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s regiment of cadets, the MMA Band and Honor Guard promote the Academy’s mission by showcasing leadership, discipline and knowledge through music. As ambassadors of America, the Academy and the community, they marched in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. last spring, were selected to perform in New York City Veterans Day Parade on November 11, 2011, and are hometown favorites in the annual Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade.

WREATH AUCTION

The 5th Annual Holiday Jazz Concert & Wreath Auction will be held Friday, December 10, at St. John's Church, 159 Main Street in Sandwich, from 7 to 10 PM. Professional musicians George Machon, James Thomas and friends will be featured in a benefit for the Sandwich Schools Band Boosters.
A silent auction of handcrafted holiday wreaths donated by local businesses will go to lucky bidders. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 12 and under. A brand new drum set, purchased for the school band and funded by the Boosters, will debut at the event. Avoid the crowds at the mall and enjoy great music while you shop for the perfect gift!
WREATH SPECIFICATIONS:
Be creative! Use whatever materials you wish. It doesn’t have to be green. Use items from your business. Add a gift certificate. Go ahead—promote you business! The idea is to make a unique wreath that will appeal to the public. It can be pretty, funky, funny, exotic, loaded with “goodies” from your busines. Anything that will make people want to bid on it.
SILENT AUCTION:
The wreaths will be on display at the Holiday Jazz Concert by George Machon/James Thomas and Friends on Friday, December 10, 2010. We will conduct a silent auction and the winners will be announced during intermission. The winning bidder gets to take home their one-of-a-kind wreath.
PUBLICITY:
Feel free to display your wreath at your place of business. We will give you a sign to display with it to let people know you are participating. You will be listed on our website as a donor. Your name will be prominently displayed with your wreath at the auction. We will distribute your name and wreath information to our email list. We will put announcements of the event in the local newspapers.
